About Mountain View High School

Mountain View High School opened the doors for its inaugural year in August of 2009.  Mountain View High School and the Mountain View cluster were created to relieve overcrowding in our neighboring schools and clusters.  Mountain View High School specifically relieved Mill Creek High School, Dacula High School and Collins Hill High School.  The school opened with the motto “Expect Excellence in Everything”  and that motto transcends everything that we do here at Mountain View.  We expect excellence in our classrooms, from our staff, from our students and from our extracurricular activities as well.

Not only was a new high school created but along with our cluster middle school, Twin Rivers, and cluster elementary schools, Freeman’s Mill, Dyer and Woodward Mill, an entire new community was born.  Our entire cluster has adopted our motto “Expect Excellence in Everything” and we are fully confident that is what we will see in the future.

mvhs school colors and mascot

The process to select the colors and mascot involved a number of people and groups.  It was definitely a community decision.  It began with research into other Gwinnett County Schools, schools in the region and in the state.  We were looking for a mascot that was as unique as possible in those three areas.  We also looked for color combinations that were unique but would also look good on a number of different materials, cloth for uniforms, paint, letter jackets, spirit wear etc…   The list was narrowed down to three different mascots and three different color combinations.  Each color combination would have worked with each of the mascots.

In mid January of 2009, at Freeman’s Mill Elementary, we assembled a group of students, parents and staff members representing each of the three clusters that were coming together to form the Mountain View Community, Collins Hill, Dacula and Mill Creek.  We also had student and parent representation from each level in the cluster, Elementary, Middle and High.  Each of the three Mascots and Colors were presented to the group and they then had the opportunity to vote.  They voted on the mascot and the colors separately and the result was……

Mascot  - Bears
Colors  -  Black and Metallic Gold

School crest

Our crest was completely designed by a group of 10-15 Mountain View students and the process was facilitated by Todd Sims from Scholastic Images/ Balfour. The group of students was assembled from a cross section of students that made the decision to attend Mountain View High School coming from Collins Hill, Dacula and Mill Creek.  They met as a group weekly over the course of a few months.  They discussed what was important to them as they began to create the student climate of their new school and what was important that they were bringing from their former schools as they came together as one new school.  The icons on the crest represent excellence in academics, athletics the arts, extracurriculars and a balance of these important characteristics.  They also discussed how they wanted the combination of the three schools to be represented in the crest and that is evident with the three hands holding the torch with the MV in the flame.  They included our motto expect excellence in everything, in Latin of course, and they decided on a non-traditional, contemporary design.
